“There is a general consensus that Philippians consists of authentically Pauline material, and that the epistle is a composite of multiple letter fragments from Paul to the church in Philippi. These letters could have been written from Ephesus in 52–55 AD or Caesarea Maritima in 57–59, but the most likely city of provenance is Rome, around 62 AD, or about 10 years after Paul’s first visit to Philippi.”

“Regardless of the literary unity of the letter, scholars agree that the material that was compiled into the Epistle to the Philippians was originally composed in Koine Greek, sometime during the 50s or early 60s AD.”

An interesting observation is that some scholars believe the Epistle to the Philippians is actually a compilation of multiple letters that Paul wrote to the church in Philippi at different times. I’m not personally convinced of this theory, but similar ideas have been proposed for other books in the Bible.

For example, the Book of Jeremiah itself reveals that it is not a single, unified composition. The text describes how Jeremiah dictated messages to his scribe Baruch, how scrolls were written, revised, and even burned and rewritten, and how additional material was later incorporated. Jeremiah seems to be a collection of prophetic oracles, biographical narratives, and editorial additions from various sources and time periods — essentially a “book of books,” much like how the broader Scriptures were compiled over time. And we know how important it is to understand this in order to properly understand Scripture in context.

I’m not sure what to make of the compilation theory for Philippians specifically, but it’s worth noting that this process of gathering, editing, and combining writings from different occasions is a common way many parts of Scripture came together — and the Bible itself acknowledges such processes in books like Jeremiah. This perspective can be helpful when we encounter apparent contradictions or difficult passages.

I’ll trust Jesus over any scholar! I’ll take the Jesus interpretation above any liberal or conservatives or even mine. At least I aim too, no matter how imperfect!

Like asking the question WWJD but also, What Would Jesus Say About This Interpretation? WWJSATI…that doesnt work at all!

God bless…

So, may “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all” as you attempt to understand God’s amazingly preserved and collected and widely distributed Word!

HEAVEN AND EARTH SHALL PASS AWAY BUT MY WORDS SHALL NEVER PASS AWAY – JESUS
