“New Testament teaching does not focus on reforming and re structuring human systems, which are never the root cause of human problems. The issue is always the heart of man—which when wicked will corrupt the best of systems and when righteous will improve the worst. If men’s sinful hearts are not changed, they will find ways to oppress others regardless of whether or not there is actual slavery. On the other hand, Spirit-filled believers will have just and harmonious relationships with each other, no matter what system they live under. Man’s basic problems and needs are not political, social, or economic but spiritual ….” – John MacArthur on Titus 2:9-10 (https://www.gty.org/library/bibleqnas-library/BQ010813/What-Is-Scriptures-View-of-Slavery)
The New Testament and Old were written in times in which slavery was a reality and even today in some places still is. But this would still apply to employee and employer relationships as a principle is being laid out here. Other verses that may apply here to think about is:
”[1] Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. [2] Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. [3] For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. [4] For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. [5] Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. [6] For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. [7] Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.” – Romans 13:1-7
And Jesus:
“[21] Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: [22] Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
[24] Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They answered and said, “Caesar’s.” [25] And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” [26] But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.” – Luke 20:21-22
But I think this passage sums it all up really well and gets us back to what John MacArthur was pointing to and why it was OK in the book of Acts for them to disobey when it came to the spreading of the gospel of salvation and then I will end with many prayer passages.
”[1] Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, [2] for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. [3] For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, [4] who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. [5] For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, [6] who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, [7] for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.” – 1 Timothy 2:1-7
So, what is more important than ending communism or slavery or abortion or even saving the republic etc etc etc is the salvation of sinners. Now, if one has to go to prison because they violate laws over the issue of souls, so be it. Preach in prison like the apostles did in the book of Acts and Paul did.
Some verses that go along with the above prayer for those in authority and the gospel are here:
”[18] praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; [19] and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, [20] for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” – Ephesians 6:18-20
”[1] Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. [2] Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; [3] meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, [4] that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. [5] Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. [6] Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” – Colossians 4:1-6
Notice in this passage Paul says this to masters of slaves in the context of slaves obeying their masters (Colossians 3 at the end up to 4 here quoted) and notice that he calls both slaves and masters to focus on the gospel in prayer. The gospel will change the hearts of the masters and the slaves in a governmental Roman system that slavery was the law of the land.
Christianity is applicable in any system! To me, this is beautiful and glorious. And as Christ said in John 13:34,35:
“[34] A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
And this can be done under any system!!! And has been done as believers have endured many systems of government and will continue to do so.
So, as America may or may not become more and more antagonistic toward us believers, we can still love God and one another no matter the future of America. Let us be faithful in whatever situation we find ourselves in being more concerned about the souls of our political opposites then winning the next election and may God bless us with unity as.a fruit of the changed hearts of men via the gospel in our nation but never at the expense of the gospel of our salvation!
