In sickness and in health

If Celsus had carefully weighed the meaning of the word “profitable,” and had considered that the truest profit lies in virtue and in virtuous action, he would not have applied the phrase “as far as it is profitable” to the service of such demons, as he has acknowledged them to be. If, then, health of body and success in life were to come to us on condition of our serving such demons, we should prefer sickness and misfortune accompanied with the consciousness of our being truly devoted to the will of God. For this is preferable to being mortally diseased … Continue reading In sickness and in health

God matters

Celsus supposes that men “discharge the duties of life until they are loosened from its bonds,” when, in accordance with commonly received customs, they offer sacrifices to each of the gods recognised in the state; and he fails to perceive the true duty which is fulfilled by an earnest piety. For we say that he truly discharges the duties of life who is ever mindful who is his Creator, and what things are agreeable to Him, and who acts in all things so that he may please God. Again, Celsus wishes us to be thankful to these demons, imagining that … Continue reading God matters

Jesus came to save

And how many others are still bowed down and bound by Satan, who hinders them from looking up at all, and who would have us to look down also! And no one can raise them up, except the Word, that came by Jesus Christ, and that aforetime inspired the prophets: And Jesus came to release those who were under the dominion of the devil; and, speaking of him, He said with that depth of meaning which characterized His words, “Now is the prince of this world judged.” Origen. 1885. “Origen against Celsus.” In Fathers of the Third Century: Tertullian, Part … Continue reading Jesus came to save

Pray for Nagenndra’s wifey

Trust Jesus as He has been turning the nations to Yahweh our Creator for 2000 years and running now! Did you know that the Biblical writings from the BC (BCE) predicted a coming “Servant/Messiah” who would bring God’s word to the nations world over? Did you know that Jesus claimed to be that Messiah and claimed that His message would go to the nations world over? Did you know that Jesus predicted both good and bad players in His multicultural/cross border kingdom? Did you know Jesus said His kingdom is not of this world? And yet the gates of hell … Continue reading Pray for Nagenndra’s wifey

So many men to God

“But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.” – Luke 11:15 “But wisdom is justified of her children.” – Jesus Matthew 11:19 “I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, That thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.” – Isaiah 49:6 Trust Jesus as He has been turning the nations to Yahweh for 2000 years and running now! Did you know that the Biblical writings from the BC (BCE) predicted a coming “Servant/Messiah” who would bring God’s word to the nations world over? Did you … Continue reading So many men to God

The Pastor that loves everybody but his own family

The reason why somebody does the same good act seems to matter. Is a person a good person if that person’s reason for the good he/she is doing is not good? It seems that a person can be declared good before God if they are doing good in harmony with their Creator, rather than in opposition to Him. If one’s deeds are done out of love for God and not in rebellion against Him, then that person may be considered good in God’s eyes. Maybe this is one reason why God says that all our righteousness is as filthy rags … Continue reading The Pastor that loves everybody but his own family

The center of our hearts

“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die.” – John 12:32-33 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that … Continue reading The center of our hearts

Origen’s cool response to Celsus

From my layman-level understanding, Origen wrote this in response to Celsus arguing that Plato said some of the same things Christ said but in a more intelligent form, to which Origen has this in part as a response which, considering the success of Christianity in getting sometimes the same truth to the masses, would have probably impressed Plato some. Here is Origen’s cool response: And further, we are not to imagine that a truth adorned with the graces of Grecian speech is necessarily better than the same when expressed in the more humble and unpretending language used by Jews and … Continue reading Origen’s cool response to Celsus

All ye that are heavy laden

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Jesus Matthew 11:28-30 Translated into shoegaze: “Drift toward Me, all you who are blurred and heavy with the static of sin and of the world, and I will drown out the noise for you. Let your weight dissolve into My feedback; soak in the hum of My … Continue reading All ye that are heavy laden
