Warn them to not fight with God

In Tertullians tract To Scapula! Count Scapula…Just kidding! “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. [32] Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is … Continue reading Warn them to not fight with God

Yet still…

We have no master but God. He is before you, and cannot be hidden from you, but to Him you can do no injury. But those whom you regard as masters are only men, and one day they themselves must die. Yet still this community will be undying, for be assured that just in the time of its seeming overthrow it is built up into greater power. For all who witness the noble patience of its martyrs, as struck with misgivings, are inflamed with desire to examine into the matter in question; and as soon as they come to know … Continue reading Yet still…

The greater the reward

It is for freedom from crime so singular, for a probity so great, for righteousness, for purity, for faithfulness, for truth, for the living God, that we are consigned to the flames; for this is a punishment you are not wont to inflict either on the sacrilegious, or on undoubted public enemies, or on the treason-tainted, of whom you have so many. Nay, even now our people are enduring persecution from the governors of Legio and Mauritania; but it is only with the sword, as from the first it was ordained that we should suffer. But the greater our conflicts, … Continue reading The greater the reward

We are mown down

The oftener we are mown down by you, the more in number we grow; the blood of Christians is seed. Many of your writers exhort to the courageous bearing of pain and death, as Cicero in the Tusculans, as Seneca in his Chances, as Diogenes, Pyrrhus, Callinicus; and YET THEIR WORDS DO NOT FIND SO MANY DISCIPLES AS Christians do, teachers not by words, but by their deeds. That very obstinacy you rail against is the preceptress. For who that contemplates it, is not excited to inquire what is at the bottom of it? who, after inquiry, does not embrace … Continue reading We are mown down

If you think your god is dead….

Beautiful! Zeus is Dead however….God is still alive “Isaiah 42:1-9 KJV[1] Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. [2] He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. [3] A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. [4] He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall … Continue reading If you think your god is dead….

What a cool chapter from Tertullian!

What a cool chapter from Tertullian! Even as things are, if your thought is to spend this period of existence in enjoyments, how are you so ungrateful as to reckon insufficient, as not thankfully to recognize the many and exquisite pleasures God has bestowed upon you? For what more delightful than to have God the Father and our Lord at peace with us, than revelation of the truth, than confession of our errors, than pardon of the innumerable sins of our past life? What greater pleasure than distaste of pleasure itself, contempt of all that the world can give, true … Continue reading What a cool chapter from Tertullian!

Where there is nothing of God

“Blessed is the man That walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; And in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That bringeth forth his fruit in his season; His leaf also shall not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall … Continue reading Where there is nothing of God

The world is God’s

Tertullian in discussion of the theatres of his day. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” (1 John 2:15–17) “And you hath he quickened, who were dead … Continue reading The world is God’s

Night of the living dead

Every knee will bow as some already have! Trust Jesus over the gods of this world and the biggest one of all, SELF! Do not what thou wilt but rather what He wills! “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” – Jesus Matthew 6:9-10 God bless… “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, … Continue reading Night of the living dead

To tremble or not to tremble

Jeremiah 36 and must read! The whole motive and spirit of Jeremiah’s book is revealed! Some take heed and some don’t but the whole point is: “that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.” (Jeremiah 36:3) and this is sent specifically to Judah in the days of a King of Judah but take note that this is also for “that nations” too! I was praying this morning that I would take God’s Word more seriously because of Isaiah 66:2 and what a chapter to then read! (Not that I don’t but sometimes you can get a little mechanical if … Continue reading To tremble or not to tremble
